It has been so much fun."

Curriculum - Philosophy

We believe that each child has an innate desire to learn. We encourage this desire by setting high standards and providing a challenging curriculum that is geared to each child's needs. Each subject studied is given a purpose and use in life. Individuality and personal goals are nurtured. While we emphasize that each student have a strong foundation in all academic basics, we also work with each student individually to ensure that he has a study program that aligns with and forwards his personal goals.

In addition to the strong academic curriculum, Lewis Carroll Academy places an emphasis on the arts. The visions of the artist become the reality of tomorrow. Learning about the art form itself is extremely valuable. Additionally, each student participating in our arts program learns and practices the value of professionalism, responsibility and teamwork. These qualities are valuable in any area of life, whether or not the child has a desire to pursue a professional career in the arts.

Standards

Another unique quality of our school, and where we differ from most learning institutions, is that the student is taught to understand one hundred percent of what is being studied. He does not memorize just to pass a test, and is not passed up if he has not understood his materials yet. Our standard is that each student be able to APPLY what he has studied.

To this end, our school includes the Qualifications Department. This department is responsible for seeing that the student is learning each subject to the fullest extent. Our highly qualified examiners routinely spend one-on-one time with the students to ensure that they are learning the subject to 100 percent understanding. This means that students don't move from chapter to chapter, or indeed from grade to grade, with the equivalent of a "D", "C" or even "B" average.

Study Methods

Lewis Carroll Academy incorporates a simple yet extremely effective study technology developed by educator and writer L. Ron Hubbard. Through Mr. Hubbard's extensive research in the area of study and education, he discovered that there are certain barriers any student can encounter that can prevent him from being able to learn. Our students learn about these barriers, how to detect them and how to handle them. With these tools of learning, a student can master any subject - not only in school, but throughout his life.

School-Wide Learning Expectations

Lewis Carroll Academy expects its students to:

  1. Master the academic, learning and study skills necessary to be successful in a high school environment, including:
    • Reading, writing and speaking effectively
    • Demonstrating proficiency in both theoretical and computational mathematics
    • Thinking logically and scientifically

    • Using computer technology across the curriculum
  2. Participate in and begin to develop an appreciation of:
    • The arts and music
    • Foreign language

  3. Take responsibility for their own actions, both socially and academically.
  4. Demonstrate good citizenship, strength of character and respect for others.
  5. Work cooperatively within the school environment and in the community at large.
