Mathematics is a vital subject in today's technological world. Application
is the keynote and mathematics at Lewis Carroll is geared toward
use in life.
Basic skills
of addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions
and decimals, are learned "cold" through the use of the
Heron Math Facts on Computer program, which teaches math facts via
the computer number pad. Beginning at the first grade level, students
drill higher and higher math facts until they know them with 100
percent accuracy in mere seconds.
Students' math
literacy is greatly enhanced by the math program employed at Lewis
Carroll Academy. In Grades K - 5, math concepts are introduced and
discussed with the class as a whole, and each student does live,
hands-on drills and exercises to learn how to apply those concepts.
In all grades, there are numerous enrichment activities covering
the new concepts being learned, again with lots of hands-on activities.
This is all in addition to the math texts themselves.
An additional
course in math discipline is taught in the 5th grade so students
learn and really get in the basic habits needed to improve the way
they do math. This all-important skill will stay with them throughout
the remainder of their schooling.
Older students'
math curriculum includes a course on money and exchange, resulting
in a student who understands the basic principles of money and exchange,
and can write proposals concerning this subject.
Our main goals
are to develop students' ability to communicate mathematics, with
each other and with their teacher, and create a high level of fluency
in the subject of mathematics.
