Lewis Carroll
Academy recognizes reading as the most essential subject. It is
the key to literacy and a foundation for success in today's world.
Lewis Carroll
Academy employs an intensive, comprehensive reading program that
was developed by Heron Books. This program ensures a firm foundation
in phonetics, and incorporates intensive reading of classic literature
and writing projects, using a gradient (step-by-step) approach.
The Heron Reading
Program has compiled a large number of excellent children's and
young adult books for each reading level, ensuring students make
smooth and steady progress in their reading proficiency while reading
quantities of well-chosen books. Books were selected based on constructive
content, vocabulary, subject matter, and complexity in concepts
and length. Starting in Form 3 (ages 8-10), the literature on the
reading lists also encourages students to integrate historical events,
scientific breakthroughs, world geography, political struggles and
human triumphs in their reading material, resulting in a very broad
frame of reference and richer learning.
Each
new student is tested individually and placed on the reading program
at the appropriate level based on his current individual literacy.
He or she then progresses through the program gaining a competency
and literacy level that far surpasses the norm in every age group.
"I
am so happy that we have this new reading program.
It has compelled me to clear all of my words. I have increased my
vocabulary quite a bit." T.T.
