Students learn geography, history and science mainly through personal
research and/or practical application of the subjects. The curriculum
requires much hands-on activity, including making maps, drawing
time lines, researching, writing papers, and constructing things
for practical use in the environment.
Science in Kindergarten
and 1st grade finds the students participating in classroom projects
and studies of the environment. They conduct experiments and participate
in the annual school-wide Science Fair. In the elementary grades,
students learn about everything from the five senses to plants to
the animal kingdom, the solar system and seasons. In the Junior
High grades, students study health, biology and age-appropriate
physics. Again, each grade's study is augmented by our annual Science
Fair.
Social studies,
American and World History and geography are enriched by many hands-on
activities and projects, including our annual Geography and History
Fair. In the elementary grades, geography students learn map skills,
map symbols, directions, compass points, states and capitols. In
Junior High, students complete an extensive course to become familiar
with the main parts of the geography of the planet and how geography
affects where and how people live. As a practical on this course,
students construct a large, detailed map of the world which includes
all major mountain ranges, lakes, rivers, as well as the countries
of the world.
We feel that
study of the humanities, sciences and social studies at all ages
gives a student greater understanding of the world at large, its
peoples, places and the events that have shaped our world.
